This role focuses on managing day-to-day civil engineering activities across various General Civils projects such as highways/local authority schemes, groundworks, drainage, Section 278 works, kerbing, and resurfacing. Below is a breakdown of the experience, qualifications, and responsibilities expected:
Experience and Qualifications:
Holds a qualification in civil engineering (HNC, HND, or Degree).
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years experience in the delivery of civil engineering schemes Valued at £5 million+.
Certifications:
CSCS Gold Card: Essential for site safety management.
SMSTS (5-day course): Required for site management.
First Aid at Work: Desirable.
UK Driving Licence: Clean or minimal points.
Professional Membership:
Member of a professional body such as ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) or CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building).
IT Skills:
Proficiency in using industry-relevant software.
Proven ability to manage teams of 5+ staff on-site.
Health, Safety & Environmental:
Lead by example, ensuring that all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards are strictly followed during the delivery of civil engineering activities
Conducting induction sessions and toolbox talks (TBT) to ensure the team understands safety protocols.
Develop and approve Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for tasks such as drainage installation, roadworks, and highway maintenance.
Act as a Temporary Works Coordinator ensuring that all temporary structures are managed according to required safety standards.
Strive to innovate in HSE practices beyond minimum compliance, especially during complex works
Solid understanding of civil engineering practices, including highways maintenance, groundworks, drainage, kerbing, and resurfacing.
Mentor junior engineers and site agents, helping them understand technical elements
Provide solutions for site issues like drainage system failures or ground instability and promote innovative approaches to increase project efficiency and reduce costs.
Capable of developing project programmes for civil works, including local authority highway schemes, ensuring key milestones for tasks are met.
Skilled in using planning software to monitor project progress
Courteous and professional, with an ability to engage with colleagues, clients, and contractors across various civil engineering activities.
Supportive and approachable, helping team members involved remain focused under pressure.
Adapt communication style when dealing with local authorities, contractors, or internal teams, ensuring everyone is aligned on project timelines and safety requirements.
Knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts, including managing variations, procurement schedules, and cost reporting for projects
Experienced in subcontractor review and management,
Identifies risks and opportunities and communicates them effectively in monthly reports.
Prepares daily and weekly reports on the status of civil projects
Deliver presentations on project progress to both clients and senior management, ensuring clear communication of all civil engineering project updates.
Maintain compliance ensuring that all works are delivered to the highest quality standards.
Handover Documentation:
Compiles the necessary documentation for Health & Safety File handover
