Our client, a government owned company, has an excellent opportunity available for an experienced Senior Inspector (Structures) to join their Highways Teams the South East region, on a permanent basis. As Senior Inspector you will be responsible for inspecting highways assets (i.e bridges, gantries, retaining walls and culverts) located along the UK’s road networking, planning for and undertaking maintenance works as required.

The role will suit a technical and methodically minded individuals who can: complete inspections schedules inline with agreed procedures and standards, raising issues to address defects, overall contributing to the prioritisation and development of maintenance schemes.

Daily duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Working with the overall Inspection Manager to plan, deliver and report upon the cyclical and adhoc Inspection programme for assets is in line with agreed timescales, budgets procedures standards, guidance and industry best practice.
  • Provide support to Inspection Manager by arranging roadspace and creating orders for suppliers to deliver bridge inspections.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders such as Local Authorities, Network Rail, Canal & River Trust and land owners to facilitate bridge inspections.
  • Producing specifications to permit the procurement of monitoring, investigation, testing and other special inspections of structures.
  • Complete cyclical and ad-hoc inspections of highway assets, including complex structures, identify defects, defect causes and options for remedial actions, in line with agreed timescales, procedures and standards.
  • Oversee and gather data from special inspections and testing.
  • Document asset condition and inspection findings in relevant systems, in line with agreed data capture and management standards, guidance and industry best practice.
  • Update the asset data of each asset in a timely manner to ensure it is kept current and create/modify maintenance actions to record future work required to keep assets in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • Complete reports and creation of technical drawings to support inspection findings and asset condition information management. Report and raise works for any safety critical issues.
  • Work with engineering teams to contribute to the development of maintenance and investment plans and prioritisation by ensuring adequate information is gathered, analysed and interpreted.
  • Respond to or attend bridge strike incident sites and provide assessments and advice, as required.
  • Conduct supplier works completion and quality checks and provide sign offs for payment.
  • Review and authorise Inspection reports and proactively manage high priority defects and their repairs.
  • Contribute to performance reviews with Providers, Planning and Development, Programme Delivery, Service Delivery teams and Quality & Performance Assurance colleagues to understand performance trends, identify risks, analyse root causes for performance issues and develop remedial action plans.
  • To provide, as required, information to support customer and stakeholder queries, claims and correspondence.
  • Understand and follow job specific risk assessments and method statements and provide clear feedback to Inspection Manager if any amendments are deemed necessary.
  • Ensuring they fulfil their personal and organisational obligations with regard to the health, safety and wellbeing of both themselves and customers at all times.

Candidates will ideally have:

  • A relevant qualification such as a HNC/HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience undertaking inspections on highway assets such as bridges, gantries, retaining walls, culverts etc.
  • Previously completed planning or undertaking of maintenance works.
  • A good understand of the functionality and condition of an asset, to such a degree that access and traffic management requirements can be specified and the duration of the works can be accurately estimated.
  • Capable of recognising and categorising defects and maintenance needs of all types of highways assets.
  • Experience in data collection and use of data capture devices.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of defect scoring systems.
  • Knowledge of the standards pertinent to highway structure management and inspection.
