Our client, a specialist M&E Contractor within the Water and Wastewater sector, is currently looking for a Design & Engineering Manager to join their Clean Water team on a permanent basis, where you will manage a diverse team of staff, including Lead and Senior Project / Design / CAD Engineers, as well as their subordinates.

Our client designs and implements a large range of projects/schemes within the Water sector, largely related to pumping, moving and treating water (From small-scale pump replacement projects through to large-scale water networks and treatment plants).

You will get the opportunity to work on a wide range of diverse projects, predominately within the Clean Water sector, across a large client base, where strong relationships have been forged over the past 20+ years. Here you will be responsible for driving efficiency through technical delivery, providing cross-programme co-ordination and technical leadership. Additionally, you will be responsible for driving excellence in health and safety, ensuring that risks are minimised in the design process.

Daily duties:

  • Ensuring technical resources are managed effectively through working with the Senior Management Team and Contracts Managers, co-ordinating design resource.
  • Ensuring design teams adopt and make effective use of standard products.
  • Ensuring required quality checking/approval procedures are carried out, developing simple but effective technical delivery processes, improving the production of design deliverables to time/cost/quality.
  • Ensuring consistency of delivery outputs through design standards.
  • Working with various parties, providing leadership that will become industry leading.
  • Mentoring and developing the design team.
  • Escalating any potential issues to the Head of Design & Innovation and Head of Engineering, before issues arise.
  • Ensuring clients’ technical requirements and industry standards are adhered to consistently.
  • Supporting the Principal Designer (CDM 2015) duties, on behalf of the business.
  • Embracing the importance of Health & Safety in all circumstances and lead by example.
  • Challenge the teams to drive efficiency in our design programme.
  • Co-ordinate efficient resourcing of workload to internal teams, and out-source where appropriate.
  • Ensure technical deliverables are produced within the required timescales, costs, quality etc.
  • Be accountable for the quality of all design deliverables and technical delivery of least whole life cost solutions.
  • Involving stakeholders in design and operational requirements, ensuring integration into designs.
  • Communicating effectively, internally and externally, with Design & Engineering team, Technical staff, Contracts Manager, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Site Agents/Engineers, Clients, suppliers and third parties.
  • Completing engineering reviews with Operational delivery

Candidates will ideally have:

  • A relevant qualification in Engineering, related to either Mechanical / Electrical / Civil / Process etc. (i.e. Degree).
  • Chartership Status / Relevant membership to such as CEng, IMechE, IET, MICE, IChemE etc.
  • A mixed knowledge of Design / Engineering, across Mechanical / Electrical / Civil / Process Engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of Water Non-Infrastructure processes, standards and legislation.
  • Experience managing diverse teams of Project / Design / CAD Engineers, with the ability to motivate and inspire.
  • Understanding of Whole Life Cost, able to guide teams to best value option technical solutions.
  • Experience in construction techniques across water, wastewater or M&E, able to manage resource needs.
  • Experience in detailed design of permanent and temporary works to deadline.
  • Knowledge and experience of CESWI and WIMES and other related industry standards such as British Standards.
  • A confident demeanour with strong communication skills, able to liaise with all levels of personnel.
  • Experience of managing external and supply chain designs (Advantageous).
  • Fully aware of the requirements of CDM (Advantageous).
  • Ability to challenge solutions & innovate to reduce embodied and operation carbon on projects (Advantageous).
  • Knowledge and experience in creating project programmes (Advantageous).
