Senior Structural Engineer - Temporary Works

Job description

Main duties and responsibilities

Carry out detailed design and checking of temporary works and permanent works for civil, structural and marine engineering projects. Provide technical support to assist with operational activities. May require travel throughout the UK and, infrequently, overseas.

Technical and design:

Preparation and checking of preliminary designs for pricing and detailed technical designs for projects; calculations, drawings, specifications, risk assessments, design certificates etc.

Ensure design outputs comply with CDM, health and safety, environmental legislation, good industry practice and other relevant guidance.

Provision of technical information and advice to site teams and support services.

Review of method statements for complex or unusual tasks.

Experience in the detailed design of permanent and temporary works and the use of CAD.

Working knowledge of relevant industry specifications; CESWI, Network Rail, Highways DMRB and MCDHW, NSSS, NSCS, Building Regulations, etc.

Assist with proposal and development of alternative solutions during bid, design or construction phases.

Assist with the development and maintenance of processes, procedures and standards for design.

Obtain or provide pricing for estimating purposes.

Liaison with customers, suppliers and third parties as necessary.

Assist with promoting the company and department to customers.

Experience in the water and rail sectors would be an advantage

Experience in obtaining third-party technical approval of proposals (Network Rail, Highways Agency, NG etc).

Academic and professional qualifications

Degree or equivalent in civil, structural or other relevant engineering discipline.

Current relevant CSCS card, SHEA passport would be an advantage.

Chartered or incorporated or membership of a relevant professional institution or working towards.

Working knowledge of engineering and design management, construction, methods, equipment, processes and technical design.

Personal

Good team worker but able to exercise own judgement.

Effective communicator with ability to assert own views.

Abilities:

Work independently and manage time and tasks.

Coaching and supervision of less experienced department personnel.

Identification of risks and opportunities.

Significant experience, preferably a mix of site and design office.

Experience in structural and civil engineering design to British Standards, Eurocodes and industry guides and good practice for permanent works and temporary works design.

Steelwork, reinforced concrete and timber design.

Appreciation of ground conditions and influence on design and interpretation of GI.

Experience in some of the areas below would be useful.

Pipeline and other thrust blocks

Excavation support, timbered, sheet piles, trench sheets with proprietary, structural steel and timber frames

Slope stability, battered excavations

Temporary pipe supports

Pipe and cable road and railway crossings

Temporary pipeline crossing points

Working platforms for tracked and wheeled plant

Crane mats

Scaffolding and falsework; structure and footings

Reinforcement cage stability

Formwork

Hoardings

Temporary bridges

Temporary foundations

Thrust walls

Tunnels and tunnelling

Shaft and heading design

Lifting beams, accessories and equipment
