Job Description:

Our client, a growing Design Consultancy, who operate within the Rail and Civil Engineering/Infrastructure sectors, have an excellent opportunity available, for an experienced Senior Design Engineer / Senior Structural Engineer, to join their team on a permanent basis. This role will be based in Birmingham, however you will be available to work from home, during the COVID-19 period, where you will be provided with full IT setup.

In this role, you will oversee the Design of multiple Rail projects (Structures & Bridges), ensuring effective Designs are created, from feasibility through delivery stages, using your Technical expertise to ensure innovative, efficient and cost effective designs are produced.

You will be expected to work using you own initiative, managing daily workload to ensure effective Designs are created within a timely manner, all-round supporting the project delivery cycle, working with and leading part of the team, who together will deliver major structures and bridge schemes, within the Rail industry, which includes but is not limited to bridge assessment, construction, reconstruction, repair and strengthening.

Daily duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the Design of multiple Rail Structural/Bridge schemes, from feasibility through to detailed design and delivery stages, inclusive of associated reporting and cost estimating.
  • Preparing design calculations, drawings, specifications, reports and other project documentation, in line with client requirements, ensuring projects adhere to national standards and codes of practice.
  • Creating 3D Designs.
  • Planning workload and undertaking site visits as required (including Safety Critical environments).
  • Providing Technical advice to Engineers, Graduates and Technicians and providing support to the wider team, as required.
  • Mentoring members of the team, including ICE support, if suitable.
  • Offering Technical expertise, whilst considering Commercial and Project Management aspects of projects, leading or project managing schemes where initiative is shown.
  • Operating in a client facing role, working/liaising with the end client/user.

Candidates will ideally have:

  • A relevant qualification related to Design, such as a Degree (i.e. MSc, MEng, BSc etc).
  • Prior experience working as a Structural Design Engineer, within the Rail sector, having worked on projects such as the Design of:
    • Bridges or Structures within a Rail environment (New build, refurbishment, strengthening, repair etc.)
    • Temporary Works.
    • Permanent Works.
  • Chartered status is not required in this role but would be advantageous. (Support can be offered for this).
  • Strong IT skills having used software such as MicroStation 3D, ProjectWise etc.
  • Strong communication skills.
