Purpose of the job

The Tunnel Site Shift Engineer is responsible for technical and engineering aspects of the Tunnel construction, which may include Primary Lining, Waterproofing and Secondary Lining Works.

The Tunnel Site Shift Engineer helps to create an efficient working environment, keeps production costs low and helps maintain employee morale.

Accountability / Key responsibilities

  • Advise on the preparation of start of shift safety briefings and constantly monitor safety.
  • Carry out Profile control using a total station and the Amberg system. Resolve any technical issues in maintaining the profile.
  • Ensure works on site are carried out safely with due regard to the protection of the workforce, public and the environment.
  • Report all construction issues to the Sub-Agent/Shift Manager.
  • Ensure all works are constructed efficiently, to the required quality and in accordance with the required contract programme.
  • Ensure all certificates, assurance and compliance certificates are generated and collated.
  • Prepare and review Method Statements and ITP's.
  • Manage effective use of materials and control of waste.
  • Verify and sign-off Check Sheets.
  • Carry out inspections as required by ITP's. Carry out compliance checks as indicated by the ITP's.
  • Liaise with Tunnel Sub-Agent, SCL Inspectors and SCL Design Engineers.
  • Implement and monitor compliance with RESS.

Experience, knowledge, qualifications & training

  • Have a good working knowledge of English, both written and verbal, and be able to report at management level.
  • Previous site experience is beneficial but not required, ideally in a tunnel with experience in medium / large size projects using SCL, Handworks, Waterproofing and/or RC techniques.
  • Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically an Engineering discipline. A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a senior technical engineering role can be demonstrated.
  • A good working knowledge of the:
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996
  • Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007
  • Management of health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and
  • other relevant legislation
  • Computer skills - Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer
  • Hold a CSCS Card.
