Principal Structural Design Engineer - Hemel Hempstead

We have an urgent requirement for a Principal Structural Design Engineer for the Design Division of our Client, a leading family owned major UK Building and Civil Engineering Contractor, with around 150 years history within the construction industry and with a reputation for quality. They combine outstanding technical expertise with the personal touch that comes with being a family-owned company. Their Structures Team are looking for an experienced Structural Engineer to support the Chief Structural Engineer in delivering on a number of projects over the coming months.

The level of experience required for the role is expected to ideally suit a Chartered Structural Engineer currently operating at Principal Structural Engineer level.

Current projects include civil / structural alterations to a major exhibition centre, bridge assessment, OHT crane replacement structural checks & investigation of latent defects / support to current and past projects.

The Role in brief:

  • May offer to subsidise travel / commute (priority will be given to the local market first)
  • The individual will be working on a wide variety of projects, including an outage building on a Power Station and a slight chance of working on HS2 Temp Works
  • You will be joining a small, yet close team. There will possibly be mentoring of the Graduate Engineer and 3D Modellers involved in the role, you will primarily be carrying out steel and concrete design and there is a lot of work on forensics to be carried out.

Job Overview Purpose:

As member of the Design Group Team reporting to the Chief Design Engineer, you will be responsible for managing a team of Engineers and CAD Technicians to produce design solutions for construction. Design solutions will vary from commencing at concept stage through to delivering existing designs from RIBA Stage 3 onwards.

The design process is to deliver well considered, quality designs solutions in a manner which upholds the Visions and Values of the Company.

You will be expected to use your Engineering, commercial, contractual, programme / time awareness and practical / technical knowledge to deliver design solutions that meet contractual obligations, recognise current legislation, standards and codes of practice, prepare construction methodology and buildability, and ensure they are of the right quality and are delivered to meet the proposed procurement and construction programmes.

You must be a good forward planner and excellent motivator able to manage teams of people, to enable them to work together to deliver a coordinated and coherent design whilst encouraging and inspiring them to produce their best work using their full flair, experience, resources and talents in a cost effective way.

You must be able to keep cool under pressure and possess good people skills with the ability to present your ideas effectively and be able to evaluate the ideas of others from other disciplines.

As part of your duties, you will be required to provide technical support to the Company, resolving problems and/or producing alternative programme and cost effective design solutions along with forensic support.

You will have an ability to identify the challenges, to make a difference, challenge the status quo, ask questions, and deliver the solution.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Responsibilities of the Principal Design Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Production of designs that are right first time
  • Provide swift design support to our Client for Prequalifications, tenders and during construction
  • Bring innovation into the design and methods of construction
  • Challenge the perceived scenarios within the design scheme as presented
  • Prepare designs in accordance with QA Procedures and ensure the quality of the output of your team
  • Supervise a team of Graduate / Design Engineers along with CAD Technicians
  • Manage time and programme constraints along with monitoring expenditure
  • Ensure that Health, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability considerations are adequately addressed
  • Provide mentoring, guidance and hands on training to your team to advance their knowledge and technical competency
  • Coordinate with other disciplines, either internally or externally depending on the project
  • Attend project meetings with both internal and external disciplines and Clients and / or their Representative
  • Nurture and develop Client relationships both within the Group and externally
  • Provide support to the Company in terms of structural and managerial knowledge and experience
  • Prepare alternative designs for company construction tenders, or research any construction methods that may provide commercial advantage for tenders
  • Prepare cost, programme & governance reports for design consultancy bids
  • Provide forensic engineering support to the Company to establish efficient solutions to any defects that may arise on any construction project
  • Provide buildability support and due diligence reports on structural design solutions carried out by external Consultants
  • Drive the solution and make a difference.

Key Skills:

  • Ability to coordinate with key disciplines within Design Group and with Site Personnel and Regional Chief Engineers
  • Ability to act as a team player and be flexible in work approach
  • Ability to carry out structural design in reinforced concrete and structural steelwork to current Eurocodes
  • Ability to review and assess structural capacity of existing structures, including identifying design or construction error and identifying appropriate solutions
  • Good understanding of long-term performance of structures, including shrinkage, thermal movement, axial shortening and effects on waterproofing
  • Willingness to support team members and provide guidance, where required, to all Members of the Team
  • A good working knowledge of MasterSeries suite of programs to at least version 2016
  • Willingness to travel on occasions to attend meetings, present to Clients and to carry out surveys and inspections and prepare reports
  • Understanding of ground conditions and in particular piling issues, including interpretation of autographic outputs and integrity testing
  • Ability to advise construction project teams on good construction practice in all structural materials.

Job Skills & Knowledge (Essential):

  • Design experience in relevant discipline
  • Good knowledge of working methods and the application of all relevant engineering codes and standards
  • Should also have detailed knowledge of specialised fields
  • Capable of role as Project Manager or Section / Group Head
  • Fully aligned with our Client's core values, vision and Build Sure principles
  • Active engagement in the "Building Individual Performance" initiative
  • Have in depth knowledge and experience of analysis software suites
  • Experienced in all aspects of design as appropriate to discipline
  • Self-motivated, able to work without supervision
  • Good timeline and commercial awareness - to deliver to time and cost

  • In depth knowledge of relevant Building regulations (A, B, K & M)
  • Excellent use of Microsoft Office Suite - particularly Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • AutoCAD & / or REVIT - basic ability
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, with a high level of attention to detail
  • Flexible working attitude, with a can-do team player approach
  • Excellent motivational and leadership skills
  • Ability to set priorities and manage work pressures
  • Ability to present ideas effectively
  • Able to evaluate ideas of others
  • Working knowledge of soil structure interaction - substructure / geotechnical design
  • Ability to lead a team, but be a team player and work at any level within the Team

Job Skills & Knowledge (Desirable):

  • CPD approved
  • An understanding of corporate social responsibility and sustainability
  • Experience in timber and masonry design
  • Working knowledge of software including AutoCAD and REVIT
  • In depth knowledge of soil structure interaction / geotechnical design (for structural / civil)
  • Bridges / Highway or railway structures design experience / capability (for structural / civil)
  • Working knowledge of drainage design
  • Ability to speak up and voice concerns in terms of process and management.

Additional skills which would be considered:

  • Working knowledge of ROBOT
  • Structural bridge design / assessment experience
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Structural Bridge Design
  • Ability to design in timber and masonry and advise on construction defects.

Flexibility: Late start Mondays and Early Finish Friday (that is for those who live far from Hemel Hempstead)...

The Candidate:

  • Due to the nature of the different projects, variance of sector / project experience is desirable if not essential. This would include Built Environment, Rail, Energy, Tunnelling, Water and Marine
  • Ideally looking for Candidates that have a background of working with a Main Contractor at some point. Also having worked with an SME Consultancy due to the nature of the projects, if you have spent time with larger Consultancies, you will have needed to have worked across different divisions
  • No management experience required but strength of experience will support the individual in mentoring Junior Members of the Team
  • 15 years+ experience
  • MasterSeries 2018 is essential, AutoCAD, REVIT and ROBOT are desirable
  • Degree and Chartership is desirable. Experience and years of service has a higher weighting. If the Candidate goes permanent there will be support on achieving Chartership.

Qualifications (Essential):

  • BSc, MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline
  • Chartered or incorporated membership of relevant professional body, ICE, IStructE or Institution of Geologists
  • CSCS Card Holder.

Qualifications (Desirable):

  • Fellow of relevant Institution
  • Additional academic qualifications.
