Principal Designer (CDM Consultant)

We have an immediate requirement for a Principal Designer for one of our premier Clients, a well-established, highly successful and Award Winning Consultancy with multiple Regional Offices, to work out of their Birmingham Office.

Overview:

Our Client is a unique, technology focused, multi-disciplinary Technical and Risk Management Consultancy which supports the Public Sector, Private and Global Blue Chip Corporations to succeed with heavy infrastructure, industrial and major building projects, as well as, retrospective digitisation of existing assets.

Through their market-leading blend of technologies and engineering expertise, they provide advice and professional support services to create, design and manage high performance results for Clients who are undertaking capital investment, acquisition, planning, design, development, construction and refurbishment projects.

You will be responsible for the successful execution of a range of projects across the business. You will be at the centre of all key decisions, ensuring that Health and Safety is considered at all stages of the projects.

The Principal Designer maintains an in depth project and technical understanding in terms of construction and manages all aspects of the pre-construction stage with a good knowledge of all work carried out.

Significant expansion of operations throughout the region has created this requirement for a Principal Designer (CDM Consultant) to work with their Commercial Team based in their Birmingham Office.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, managing and monitoring the pre-construction phase of relevant projects
  • Assisting the Client in identifying, obtaining and collating the pre-construction information
  • Ensuring that Designers comply with their duties and co-operate with each other
  • Visiting sites and carrying out an initial appraisal to establish existing hazards and site restrictions
  • Liaising with the Principal Contractor for the duration of the appointment
  • Acting as the point of contact, to ensure the duties are fulfilled in accordance with statutory regulatory requirements, approved code of practice and industry advice
  • Providing an advisory and support service to Construction Industry Clients
  • Reviewing implications of procurement methods in respect of CDM Regulations
  • Promote and manage clear communication between project duty holders with respect to coordination of outputs and management of health and safety issues at all project stages.

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure adherence to the design brief / scope of services - CDM2015
  • Ensuring that designers have established safe methods for construction and making this available as part of the pre-construction information
  • Carry out H&S specific design reviews throughout the design and construction phases of a project
  • Prepare and issue the Health & Safety File
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the Company's H&S First culture
  • Assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others' health, safety and security as defined in the Company Health and Safety Policy to include:
    • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks
    • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
    • Reporting potential risks identified
    • Proactively encourage employees under your jurisdiction to work safely and commit to health and safety including training.

Fulfil the Clients Requirements:

  • Undertake significant elements of the design personally, including but not limited to: producing design calculations, sketches, specifications, reports and risk assessments. Where necessary, undertake analysis of project elements using suitable software packages and produce computational models accordingly.

Quality:

  • Undertake thorough checking of technical content of work carried out by others to ensure that deliverables are correct and in accordance with all relevant standards and regulations
  • Ensure that all work is carried out in full compliance with the Company's Procedures. Participate in Quality Audits and ensure that any non-conformances are closed out within agreed timescales, and proactively adopt / disseminate best practice wherever it is identified.

Personal Objectives, Learning and Development:

  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff and to assist, where practicable, in the mentoring and development of staff
  • Appraise staff through the PDR process and provide guidance to filling development needs.

Confidentiality:

  • Ensure information about the business of the Company is only divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Company policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

The 'ideal' Candidate will:

  • have 5+ years' experience in a similar CDM Co-ordinator / Principal Designer role
  • have a Design related qualification
  • have a recognised professional qualification in Construction Health & Safety(NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate)
  • be a Certified or Incorporated Member of the Association for Project Safety
  • completed a APS Principal Designer 2 day course (or equivalent)
  • have experience in the construction industry (preferably with/for a Contractor, including relevant experience with similar projects)
  • have previous Rail or Housing experience (up to 5 years)
  • be a good communicator and well organised
  • be computer literate with standard Office applications.
