Job description

Roles and Responsibilities as a Lead Geotechnical Engineer;


  • act as the routewide Phase 2 geotechnical subject matter lead and the main interface with ID's geotechnical subject matter experts;
  • be the designate Principal Designer's Representative for routewide geotechnical design issues;
  • lead the area teams in the definition of geotechnical scope, including required investigations etc;
  • develop project specific geotechnical proposals to meet requirements;
  • support the area teams to deliver consistent, value for money solutions across Phase 2.
  • Review technical submissions from the design consultants and technical standards for the geotechnical engineering of the project where these relate to route wide earthworks;
  • work with the Phase 2 construction and logistics and transport assessment team to minimise the impact of earthworks operations on the adjacent communities;
  • regularly report on progress, issues and programme; and
  • deputise for the Civil Engineering Manager as required.


You will be expected to:

  • enable and support project delivery as the subject matter lead for Phase 2 geotechnical matters;
  • provide specialist knowledge and leadership for the geotechnical discipline and associated delivery support to the business;
  • Interface with ID to ensure the evidence is provided that the technical and assurance requirements are met by the PSCs in their documentation;
  • Integrate the geotechnical discipline with the other project disciplines and delivery area teams including architecture, civils, rail, environment, third party interface, construction logistics and planning, etc.
  • Support the area teams through detailed design and construction by D&B contractors to ensure project specification and requirements are met and delivered in a consistent manner.
  • Ensure that all designs are assured in accordance with the Technical Assurance Plan.
  • Ensure safety is a key priority in all aspects of the role.
  • Ensure that all designs are carried out with safe construction and maintenance as a key priority.
  • Participate in CDM reviews, etc., as required, to ensure all CDM requirements are met.


  • Must be fully conversant with relevant geotechnical engineering principles and standards and be able to interpret these in the railway environment.
  • Degree qualified Chartered Engineer with a demonstrable track record of succeeding in a similar role on a major rail or infrastructure project in a multi-disciplinary design and delivery environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of earthworks engineering, including engineering geomorphology, ground treatments, foundation engineering, embankments and cuttings, reporting and associated risk management.
  • Comprehensive understanding of minerals assessment, mining/extraction and mining dereliction issues.
  • Good knowledge of FEM numerical analytical methods and associated information requirements, as well as a good understanding of contaminated and other land investigation, assessment and remediation is desirable.
  • Good core IT skills including outlook, excel and Powerpoint


  • Strong communication and influencing skills.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills with proven ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplined management team.
  • Proven ability to organise and plan in order to meet project deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel to meetings outside the normal place of work.
  • The individual should be willing to work flexible hours in order to meet project deadlines.


  • As the discipline lead for geotechnical, the candidate will manage all day to day issues as the subject matter lead. Specialist input may be procured from PSCs or externally as required.
  • Any issues between disciplines may be referred to the Head of Engineering for agreement of the best overall solution.
  • Many decisions will require alignment and joint understanding with the discipline (geotechnical) counterpart.
  • May be required to "Prepare or Check" core engineering deliverables.
  • May also be required to "approve" as an accredited assurer.
