My client, a major contractor working in join venture with two other major contractors, is seeking to attract an experienced Instrumentation and Monitoring Manager to join their team. The project you will be working on is Silvertown Tunnel. 

This new tunnel will connect the Greenwich peninsula and the Silvertown district. The design includes a 1.4-kilometre twin-bore road tunnel under the River Thames as well as 0.6-kilometres of access ramps. It will connect south of the River Thames with the access to the existing Blackwall Tunnel and north of the River Thames with the Tidal Basin Roundabout, in Silvertown, easing traffic congestion in this key London location.

The purpose of this role is to manage the projects administratively and technically including resource planning, monitoring, scheduling, providing supervision, technical guidelines and directions to team members on multiple projects for successful completion of instrumentation engineering activities.

Your responsibilities will include: 

Safety

  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to the safety and health framework, policies and management system requirements and expectations;
  • Develop and maintain an awareness of SHE hazards and associated risks and demonstrate a commitment to eliminate or minimise those risks;
  • Understand and effectively undertake SHE accountabilities.

Business Performance

  •  Responsible for developing and implementation of monitoring plans, programme and procedures for installation, protection, operation, maintenance and removal of equipment and instrumentation.
  • Responsible for I&M Management and management of all related approvals with 3rd parties in line with the Third-Party Agreements
  • Responsible for appropriate supervision for instrument installation, monitoring, calibration checks, calibration registers and maintenance in accordance with the accepted Contractors specification and to ensure no delay to construction activities.
  • Ensuring monitoring of surface ground movement and adjacent assets is undertaken in advance of construction, or as required by third parties.
  • Ensuring baseline readings being obtained in advance of commencement of construction activities and that readings are taken at the frequency specified in the Contractors monitoring Plan during construction activities.
  • Responsible for database management and ensuring that data is correctly entered, as well as validation of the electronic processing of data into information including the comparison of real-time data with manual back-up surveys.
  • Providing in-time information required for all review meetings, including copies of all processed monitoring data to the Project Manager and reporting against the agreed trigger levels.

Governance

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements and all relevant Company and Joint Venture policies and processes.

Other

  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners’ Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company’s operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.

Education and Qualifications

  • A degree in a scientific subject, or equivalent relevant business experience.

Experience, Skills and Behavioural Competencies

  • Appropriate professional qualification.
  • Experience in management of Instrumentation and Monitoring on a tunnelling project.
  • Previous experience of management, installation, implementation, operation, maintenance and removal of instrument monitoring systems on a major project of similar nature.
  • Familiar with environmental regulations for AONBs and ESA in relation to monitoring and instrumentation.
  • Relevant CSCS Card
  • Creative problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and a high level of numeracy.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong teamworking skills, with an ability to motivate others and to lead or manage teams and projects
  • Capable of summarizing and presenting complex data in a clear and concise manner.
