Job Description:

Our client, a large, established and growing principal contractor within the Civil Engineering sector, is currently searching for a Design Manager to join their team on a permanent basis.

This role will entail managing the Design elements of a large Highways/Infrastructure Improvement scheme near the Coventry area, and work on the project will compromise highway and junction improvement, S278/S38 work, access roads, road works, including all related groundworks and drainage.

The role would suit an ambitious Design Manager who can be accountable/responsible for all design and technical aspects of a project, ensuring that the scheme it is delivered on budget and to programme. This will entail the effective management of both internal and external parties, where effective communication skills will be a key. The successful Design Manager will ensure that all schemes adopt a 'best value' approach, minimising cost, maximising value and exposing opportunity.

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Work through the project stages including feasibility, initial design, planning application, testing, detailed design and financial close.
  • Review design drawings in accordance with industry legislation and regulations.
  • Review design proposals from internal and external parties, ensuring that the most effective solution is chosen.
  • Attend internal and external meetings, which will include chairing meetings, accurately collating required and agreed information and disturbing data to all relevant parties.
  • Support the commercial team in evaluation of alternative design solutions offered by subcontractors. This may also entail working Estimators, to advise on upcoming works.
  • Research and develop new products for alternative forms of construction (innovation).
  • Monitor Health & Safety issues.

Candidates will ideally have:

  • A relevant qualification in Civil Engineering or Construction (i.e. Degree/HND/HNC or equivalent).
  • Previous experience working in a similar role, as a Design Manager, on relevant projects such as Highway Improvement schemes or other related Infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of legislation and regulations used within the Highways, Civil Engineering and Infrastructure sectors.
  • Strong IT skills including the use of AutoCAD design software.
  • Strong management ability, including clear communication skills.
  • Chartership status or be working towards Chartership status. (Advantageous not required).
