Job description

A Highways Engineer is required on a contract basis for a leading international multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy to be based in their City Centre office.

In this role you will support the development and delivery of highway improvement schemes ranging from small/minor improvements through to large and complex improvements in accordance with the objectives set by Highways England. Contributing to the development of the delivery programme and works, to agreed milestone dates and budgets agreed with the programme team.

Principle accountabilities

  • Develop and prepare detailed designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables for road renewal schemes in accordance with the agreed brief
  • Monitor progress against programme to ensure they meet the brief/scope agreed with the portfolio manager
  • Ensure designs developed are appropriate and meet the expected levels of technical excellence
  • Assist the roads design lead in the delivery of scheme designs in accordance with the agreed brief
  • Seek innovation in the delivery of schemes and techniques used to design and construct them
  • Facilitate the performance and improvement manager in achieving targets and business improvement
  • Produce detailed designs that take into account the sustainability requirements of the network, in accordance with DMRB standards
  • Be adaptable and work positively with the team through change and if/when required support the team with detailed design activity

Broad dimensions of the role:

  • Provide professional and technical excellence in traffic and highway engineering
  • Report to the roads (design) Lead on a weekly basis on performance against budget and programm

Develop detailed designs for road renewal schemes included in the forward programme for the following fields

  • Pavements - Road Restraint Systems - Traffic Signs and Road markings - Drainage -Fencing

Support the Roads Design lead in the Develop Schemes process
Liaises with the PDS team as required and the construction teams

Candidate Specification:

- A recognised qualification in transport or civil engineering (minimum HNC level)
- Demonstrable experience in the preliminary design and development of highway schemes (preferably with some on Highways England Projects
- Broad knowledge of design codes (DMRB / MCHW etc)
- Broad knowledge of CDM and other H & S legislation
- Knowledge and experience of the Highways England procedures necessary to deliver a highways project
- Knowledge and experience of the use of computer design tools and transport planning tools
- Report writing skills
- Full driving license
